Effects of Gastric Surgery

Updated: Jul 30, 2018

Upon researching the relationship between obesity and substance abuse, I stumbled across an article that really made an impact on myself...

The most interesting article I read while researching substance abuse and oobesitybesity, was an article that described the after effects of gastric surgery. Kanye West went on a rant at the TMZ headquarters earlier this year that portrayed a piece of what I had read.

The article provided evidence to show that suicide rates, and the use of drugs skyrocketed after the procedure, which makes me think that this is no coincidence. It's scary to think that a simple weight loss surgery can put anyone at risk in these ways. Gastric surgery often leads to dramatic weight loss which results in sagging skin, so the next step would be liposuction. Most doctors explain that these surgeries aren't meant to be cosmetic, but to help save people’s lives.

Society seems to think that because a person isn’t as thin as a toothpick that they need to lose weight and get into shape, but with Kanye’s testimony and evidence from sources as proof, this can and will lead to substance abuse, and depression. This article really affected me emotionally because the only thing I could think of, was the people who believed that the procedure was going to change their life positively, but ended up committing suicide or turning to drugs to further feed their addiction.
